This is determined by the physical and chemical properties of asphalt and cannot be completely avoided in all asphalt distribution scenarios; only odor intensity and duration vary. Hot asphalt, modified asphalt and emulsified asphalt are commonly used in road construction, and they show distinct differences in odor concentration and smell characteristics during operation.
Hot asphalt creates the most obvious odor in construction. To meet distribution mobility requirements, it must be heated to a liquid state between 130℃ and 180℃. Under high‑temperature conditions, light‑oil fractions, aromatic hydrocarbons and other volatile substances inside asphalt evaporate rapidly, forming light‑black asphalt fumes accompanied by strong pungent burnt smells. Every 10℃ rise in temperature greatly accelerates volatilization and significantly intensifies odors. Formulated with SBS, rubber and other modifiers, modified asphalt releases heavier, more irritating odors that last longer upon high‑temperature volatilization.
In comparison, ambient‑temperature emulsified asphalt requires no high‑temperature heating. It is atomized and distributed only under pressure, producing very few volatile substances and extremely faint odors. It barely exerts obvious influences on surrounding environments and is mostly applied for minor repairs and thin‑layer seal construction. Apart from asphalt itself, equipment conditions also affect odor levels. Residual aged asphalt inside asphalt pipelines or uneven tank heating can cause local asphalt overheating and carbonization, generating stronger burnt odors.
In terms of odor coverage and dissipation patterns, natural wind quickly blows away asphalt fumes during open‑air road construction. Odors only concentrate within a 5‑10‑meter working radius and dissipate fully 10‑20 minutes after work completion. Fumes cannot diffuse quickly in tunnels, fenced‑off enclosed road sections or windless low‑lying areas, so odors remain strong and dissipate much more slowly. Meanwhile, low‑temperature rainy days feature high air humidity and poor air circulation, making odors linger longer than on sunny days.
From a safety‑protection perspective, asphalt fumes contain trace harmful volatile components. Long‑term close‑range inhalation irritates the respiratory tract. Therefore, in standardized construction, on‑site operators must wear gas masks, protective gloves, protective clothing and other protective equipment to avoid prolonged exposure to fumes. Construction teams shall also arrange on‑site ventilation and avoid working during peak hours near dense residential areas to reduce odor impacts on nearby residents. Overall, operational odors are normal physical phenomena. Standard construction and proper protective measures can mitigate safety and environmental risks.
