Product Overview
A Large-Capacity Bitumen Storage Tank stores bulk bitumen at a specified temperature and supplies material to asphalt production lines, storage terminals and downstream processing systems. Capacity, heating duty, insulation, discharge flow and control systems are configured according to project requirements.
Key Equipment Functions
Bulk Storage Capacity
Tank volume is determined by daily consumption, delivery intervals, required operating reserves and available installation space. Gross capacity and usable capacity are specified separately.
Temperature Control
Indirect thermal oil heating and thermal insulation can be configured to maintain the required storage temperature. The heating system is sized according to bitumen properties, ambient conditions and heat-loss calculations.
Controlled Material Transfer
Pumps, valves, strainers, heated connections and jacketed or heat-traced pipelines can be selected according to bitumen viscosity, required flow rate and pipeline layout.
Plant System Integration
The tank can operate as a standalone storage unit or form part of a larger system incorporating heating equipment, transfer pumps, instrumentation and PLC or SCADA controls.
Configurations & Selection
Tank Orientation
Horizontal Tank: Suitable for sites with sufficient ground area. Foundation loads, access clearances and transport dimensions are assessed during engineering.
Vertical Tank: Suitable where a smaller ground footprint is preferred. Foundation loading, wind loads, seismic conditions and erection requirements must be evaluated for the project.
Heating & Insulation
Indirect Thermal Oil Heating: Heating coils transfer heat to the stored bitumen. Coil arrangement and heating duty are determined by the required temperature range and heat-up time.
Insulation & Cladding: Mineral wool or another specified insulation material can be selected according to thermal calculations. External cladding protects the insulation from weather exposure.
Storage & Discharge
Capacity Planning: Gross volume, usable volume, operating liquid levels and required expansion space are established during design.
Transfer Equipment: Pump type, flow rate, discharge pressure, valve configuration and pipeline heating are selected according to the medium and transfer conditions.
Instrumentation & Safety: Temperature sensors, level measurement, high-level alarms and overfill protection can be included according to the control philosophy and applicable requirements.

Applications & System Integration
Asphalt Mixing Plants
Provides a storage buffer between bitumen deliveries and plant consumption. Required discharge flow and operating temperature are determined by the production schedule and process demand.
Bitumen Storage Terminals
Supports bulk receipt, heated storage and dispatch to road tankers or other transfer systems, subject to the specified loading and unloading requirements.
Road Construction Projects
Provides site-based bitumen storage for paving operations. Capacity and transfer arrangements are selected according to material demand, delivery frequency and site logistics.
Bitumen Processing Facilities
Can serve as a holding or feed tank for compatible bitumen processing operations. Modified bitumen, emulsions and solvent-containing products require separate temperature, material compatibility and safety assessments.
System Integration Requirements

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How is usable capacity different from gross capacity?
A: Gross capacity is the tank's total internal volume. Usable capacity is the volume available within the specified operating limits after accounting for minimum operating level, required expansion space and other design restrictions.
Q: How is the heating system sized?
A: Heating duty depends on the bitumen quantity, initial and target temperatures, required heat-up time, heat losses and ambient conditions. Pumping and temperature requirements must also be considered when selecting the heating arrangement.
Q: Can the tank be supplied in modules for international shipment?
A: Modular fabrication and field assembly may be possible depending on tank dimensions, component weights, transport restrictions and site assembly capabilities. The shipping and erection method should be agreed during engineering.
Q: How is the required storage temperature maintained in cold climates?
A: The insulation system and heating capacity are selected using the minimum ambient temperature, required storage temperature and calculated heat losses. Temperature sensors and automatic controls can be incorporated according to the control requirements.
Q: What quality documents can be provided?
A: The agreed documentation may include material certificates, welding records, applicable NDT reports, test certificates, coating inspection records and as-built drawings. Certification and third-party inspection requirements must be confirmed before ordering.
Q: Can the tank be integrated with an existing asphalt mixing plant?
A: Integration can be assessed using the existing plant layout, process connections, pump requirements, electrical data and control interface specifications. Final compatibility is confirmed through engineering review.
Q: How are transportation costs evaluated for large tanks?
A: Transport planning depends on overall dimensions, shipment weight, route restrictions, port facilities and installation arrangements. Modular shipment may be considered where technically and commercially feasible.
